How long after the Colonies had settled in America did it take for them to start forming a more American accent instead of a British one?

To put it simply, it's a common misconception that the modern "British accent", whatever that actually is, has been spoken in the British Isles since the time of the revolution. Both American English and British accents have constantly been in flux and have developed semi-independently since the first British settlement of the Americas.
