Thursday Reading & Recommendations | September 03, 2020

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Any good books about the Crusader States or the Kingdom of Jerusalem in particular? Just finished Fiefs and Vassals, looking for a follow up

Hello!

Looking for book recommendations on how ships were maintained during the middle ages. Boat owners say that owning ships is 50% maintenance. With the enormous stress put on a community in the middle ages to build a boat, KEEPING it seaworthy would be just as important. Does anybody have any recommendations where I can read more about this process or what kinds of things the seafaring communities would do in the middle ages to maintain their fleets?

Hi all! Any recs re: medieval religious culture?

Specifically interested in its relationship with magic, gender, sexuality, politics, warfare and monasticism/monastic-like orders like the Knights Templar. Especially interested in late Middle Ages, but very interested in Early and High as well.

Thanks so much for your thoughts! :)

I am interested in Ptolemy Egypt, specifically trade and contact with Sub-Saharan and mid-Saharan nations such as Axum, and Sudan. I'm interested in what else is happening in the middle of Africa during late antiquity (is Greek Egypt counted as late antiquity?).
