Well, if you interview French Canadians, Inuits or people from First Nations in Canada, they won't give you a very respectful assessment of the wonders of the British Empire. Same goes for Aboriginals in Australia. So no, they were not "nice" by any extent, except in the eye of those who were from Britain.
