Dracula was written in 1897. The Hound was written in 1902. Were demonic dogs a common theme in literature at the time?
EDIT: I don't know how the "Royalty, Nobility, and Exercise of Power" got there. It wasn't intentional
The Hound of the Baskervilles likely takes its inspiration from folklore - particularly that of southwestern Britain where the story is set - the legends of the Black Dog. This hellish hound is said to haunt the moors and to be very dangerous to encounter. The dog of legend is typically described as larger than a normal dog, usually nocturnal, and as having giant teeth and glowing red eyes. Avoid them!!!
A recent study of the Black Dog legends is quite good: Mark Norman, Black Dog Folklore (2015)
