How "uniform" were the crusaders appearance/gear

Hello!

I was watching Kingdom of Heaven and noticed how the knights had various styles of helmets from one another... my question is how cohesive was the appearance of the knights? I figure it would be a major task to supply everyone with the same gear, so would we have expected to see alot of variation in appearance amongst knights?

Hopefully an expert in military equipment in general can help you with the helmet styles, but I wrote something last year about the uniforms for the Military Orders:

Popular imagery of crusading orders like the Templars and Hospitalers show consistent gear and uniforms. Is this realistic?

(I should also add that the blue uniforms of the "regular" knights in Kingdom of Heaven certainly aren't realistic. But I'm not too sure about their other gear.)
