Today:

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Hi. Mods asked me to post here as I was providing an update on the potential slave grave(s) found on my property in rural GA.

Here's my original post: https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/itcs8y/i_think_there_is_a_slave_grave_on_my_property_ga/

Here's the update post I just made with much more details unearthed: https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/ivbjzr/i_have_found_unmarked_graves_on_my_property_in/?

Can someone help me determine if J H Mapp owned slaves in this location?

41 1 comments India has a particular obsession with cricket, yet the former British (and French) nations of Africa almost exclusively play football (soccer). Was there anything different with regards to colonial rule in India versus Africa that saw the two regions take up two very different sports?
28 1 comments John Barker Church, brother-in-law of Alexander Hamilton, fought for and later aided and abetted the Continental Army and served as a US Envoy to France before becoming a British MP. Not to put too fine a point on it, but... HOW? How did he manage to get elected rather than hanged for treason?

Are there any free resources with historical information on par with posts from here? I've exhausted the FAQs and I want more things to read.

I've noticed that Wikipedia is pretty bad when it comes to factual accuracy and readability.

I would kill to find a massive resource with lots of articles to read about different historical subjects. I am pretty low income so I can't really afford to get past academic paywalls - a college tuition is beyond my means

From a historical POV, what is the probability that there will be a USSR-style purge of universities in the United States in the near future?

I'm a grad student in the USA, and I'm basically trying to evaluate if I should be taking measures for my own safety.
