I've tried finding some books about Leo Major online, but only one pops up and it's in French...which I don't speak.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a translated version, or any other books about him.
I'm a Brit living in Holland and I have often heard about the story of the single handed liberation of Zwolle. I used to work ( I'm a plasterer but also ex military RN) for a company in Bergen op Zoom and drove passed the Canadian war grave cemetery. Being interested in the war I took a look around and was shocked to find so many young men remembered .I live in the area of island known as Welcheren and knew about the British commando raid on Vlissingen but not much about the part played by the Canadian soldiers. After looking into the incredible events it soon became clear that without the bravery and courage of these men things could have ground to a horrific halt. As I said I live in the south end of Holland which is mostly agricultural with many small villages . Each village has at least one church and each church has a plaque with the names of the liberators and the names of those who gave their lives to liberate them. Even today the Dutch pay their respects ( in total earnest) Many villages have only Canadian names. The reason I am making this communication is because last year I was in Rotterdam in a well known restaurant and one of the staff was a young Canadian woman and after asking if she had seen any of the many monuments to the Canadian soldiers.... she didn't know what I was talking about. The Dutch people love the Canadian people ( not just because they are generally kind and polite) but because they know that they own their freedom to these men who came across an ocean to help. Why don't the Canadian people know about these events?
