In the movie The Patriot the protagonist is a white male farmer who doesn't own slaves but has free Blacks working for him. How common would this have been in rural South Carolina in the late 1700's?

I'm mostly wondering if this actually happened or if it was just created so Mel Gibson was more likeable.

Very uncommon. Opposition to slavery was not unheard of in the time from the Southern gentry, but it manifested itself on rhetorical speech that didn't usually get reflected in action. This earlier answer of mine about an actual South Carolinian of the time might be of interest in addressing this.
