In the Czech Republic there is lots of memorabilia about the Knights Templar. What is the history of the knights in this area?
The knowledge about the Knight Templar in Bohemia and other Czech crown lands (Moravia, Silesia, and Lusatia) was for a very long time little researched topic. About 10 years ago, came a book about Templar of Bohemia from Marie Holeckova, which summarized various findings and literature from multiple sources. The Knight Templar arrived into Bohemia in 1232 under by invitation of the king Wenceslaus I at the start of the reign. They had seats in Prague what is now the church of St. Anne in Old Town, but owned other properties around Prague and had an economic agricultural base to its commandery east of Prague what is now a suburb of Prague in the place called Uhrineves where they had a manor. In Moravia, they owned a lot of properties with the seat in Cejkovice, which oversee a large part of southern Moravia with several castles like Templstejn. Other castles in eastern Moravia were not yet successfully identified at the vicinity of the city of Vsetin like Freundensberk. Other ruins near by, having an oral legend with uncertain location or dating. There is also possible that the Templar were at the castle of Rajnochovice near-by Vsetin around the time they were getting dissolved, due preserved church relief with a Templar motif.
The order was dissolved in the Bohemian kingdom in 1312 when the French dynasty, the house of Luxembourg, got established on the Bohemian throne. One of the last document about the order is from 1308 when they deeded a part of the estate around Vsetin for the next 31 years to wealthy Moravian magnate Vok z KravaĆ. This document indicates, that the Templar believed that they will return in the future once the political situation changes.
The sudden end of the order created a lot of groundless legends and stories that been copied by historians since middle ages. Within Bohemia and Moravia, there are legends that the order owned much larger properties than is documented like castle Veveri by Brno, Sirotci Hradek by Mikulov, and many others. The best preserved ruin is Templstejn: History of the castle. The best preserved commandery is the Cejkovice with its Templar wine cellars from the 13th century: Cejkovice commandery.
