It's sort of a trope that monastic orders in Eastern Asia, including China and Japan, are associated with martial arts. How did this come about?
I don't believe Japan's warrior monks are associated with martial arts the way Shaolin monks are. They were more or less a political group that militarized when it suited their needs/ambitions.
