How did America win the revolutionary war? Did France just carry us?

So how did a volunteer army somehow defeat a global superpower? Like was there just a lot of espionage? I assume we couldn’t have won just by force right? I know France was involved but I assume they didn’t do all the work I mean the French are amazing fighters but not that amazing right?

Can anyone point me to a comparative study of colonial conflicts in that era? Something that contrasts the North-American-colonies-vs-British-Empire struggle with, say, the Irish Rebellion of 1798? Or perhaps colonial revolts against other imperial powers in the 17th or early 18th centuries?

It would be interesting to see what factors were common in the ones which were put down, or what factors were exceptional in the ones which succeeded.
