Grandad's War Reports - are these worth uploading anywhere?

by Clownfeet

Hello, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. But my Grandad passed away a few years ago and we've been going through his belongings and i came across about 50 pages of the upload below.

Is this kind of thing useful to upload anywhere. Does anyone like and use these things? or are they already in public record etc?

I'm assuming you're based in the UK? If so, you should first contact The National Archives at Kew in south-west London.

The photograph at the top of your post is of a War Diary. These were monthly narratives kept at numerous levels of the British Army to keep a record of their operations. Are all the papers you have the same type of document? An idea of what else you have would be helpful.

War Diaries of the sort you have there are the main primary source for reconstructing the activities of British Army units and formations during the Second World War. The surviving original copies of these War Diaries are stored at The National Archives and will be permanently preserved as they are very significant official records. It is worth making sure The National Archives have copies of the records you've got. If they haven't, you are in possession of unique historical documents which should be preserved and made accessible for future generations.

Alongside that, as official records they are covered by the Public Records Act, which means there is a legal requirement for them to be reviewed and then - if appropriate - made available to the public at The National Archives.

You could reach out to the museum of Risorgimento in Forli, Italy. Their collection focuses on local history until 1945. I think they would be interested in original documentation from December 1944.
