We're the people liberated from concentration camps in WW2 feed in small portions to avoid injuries until they were well enough to eat normally? If yes was there some conflict?

In the TV series Band of Brothers after the liberation of a concentration camp one of the characters say that they can't give them a normal amount of food, thanks to them being so malnourished , they will have to have small portions of food , is that true? , was that a common occurrence through all camps? , were there recorded cases of people dying because they ate to much?

/u/commiespaceinvader addresses this in In Band of Brothers, the 101st has to lock the holocaust victims back in the camp to make sure they don't eat themselves to death. Did this actually happen? In particular, many people died at Bergen-Belsen before medical professionals arrived, due to eating food that was too heavy.
