Hi all. My grandfather had served in the British Indian Army during the WWII. He was from the Kingdom of Travancore, which is part of modern day Kerala. I was never able to ask him which unit he had served with, and my father isn't sure of it either. My grandmother doesn't recall the unit's name either and there are no discharge papers or identifying patches left. My grandfather was deployed for a time in Egypt and in parts of the Middle East. My father recalls him talking about spending some time in Lebanon. Could you tell me where I could find out more or where I could look for his records? In Canada now.
Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
I hope you find what your are looking for through that guide linked by Iphikrates.
If you feel like doing detective work, you can look at this helpful Wikipedia list of all Indian Divisions (which links to pages with history of those divisions and a list of the units that comprised them) and attempt to deduce the answer to your question.
You will need more than what you posted to narrow it down to the correct regiment because you'll find out quite a few units were first assembled in Egypt for a while and then fought in the Syrian-Lebanon campaign for example, which would hit the two leads you gave. If anything, if you can at least narrow it down to the division level you'll be able to read about what your grand father went through in the war.
Finally and most obviously, was there no memorabilia from his time in the army that was passed into the family? Maybe hid somewhere in your grand mother's keepsakes? Because if you can find a badge of some sort, your quest becomes a hell of a lot easier!
