What are some good business jobs for History Majors?

by Demiurge8000

I have recently gotten by BA in History but I am unsure that I want to get an academic career so I have been considering getting a business or marketing job instead. However, I know little to nothing about the steps needed to start a career in the business world. Any advice or suggestions?

Probably the wrong sub for this, but you should find someone at your university to ask - mine puts out a huge book of "jobs with your degree", as well as staff talking about different workplaces that want historians.

Even if you want to avoid academia, you can work as a "public historian" - here in Australia it is apparently a well-paid field with a fair bit of work. Otherwise, basically any job that requires reading large amounts and synthesising/summarising what you've read into something simpler for bigwigs.

I would look into some of the non curatorial/research related roles you might be able to apply for at a museum. I myself work as a curatorial assistant however I am often surprised by how many people in marketing and museum administration have backgrounds and degrees in history themselves.

The more thought I gave to it however the more it made sense because those individuals working in donor cultivation/fundraising often have to have a strong grasp of not simply a museum's mission and place in a community but the meaning and significance of different collections, upcoming exhibits and be able to project more than simply the voice of a salesman, rather that of a historian themselves.

You have to demonstrate fundamental value behind public history initiatives to the general public to gain their trust and interest, and hopefully membership.

I feel strongly that museums offer the widest variety of career opportunities for history degree holders to work in public history.

The first step is volunteering. If you're still enrolled such as in graduate school, intern. I did both, multiple times. People look for that, it stands out that you sought out positions through volunteering that might differ from your academic training.
