What is the history of the term?
Ah, but English says "The Netherlands", "The Philippines" (Hello!), "The Gambia", and formerly, "The Sudan". Certain countries take the definite article in English; some still do as English grammar requires, others have since discarded it. And I should also note that it's hardly 'nobody'; depending on the language, and the usage case within that language, an article may be called for. In the two Philippine languages I know, a declarative sentence requires the article - "France is a country in Europe" must be "Ang France ay isang bansa sa Europa", the article in this case being 'ang'.
