So I understand that movies or books will romanticized so I want to know if these romanticizations have any merit in any case wether there was a crew who sailed adnormaly fast or if there were any true pirate fights similar to Blackbeards's in Robert E. Lee's book Or could you just straighten out my perspective of this fight is I'm misinterpreting it.
Yes, there have been renowned pirates known by their skills, but most notably for the bounties they had got at different points. Down here, our dear mod u/drylaw talks about the famous Jean Fleury, who captured 2 of the 3 ships of Hernán Cortés' treasure.
Fleury was well known by the Spanish administration, to the point that his famous attack forced the Casa de la Contratación de las Indias to create a system in order for the fleets to be escorted safely to Spain. I quote the memo from the Casa de la Contratación in this other thread about the logistics for ship acquisition by pirates.
Being a succesul pirate was really bad for your health, though. The authorities would be all over you, and they have far more resources and manpower than a pirate will ever have. Fleury managed to continue in the piracy business for some years, until he was captured by Juan de la Rentería, put to trial in Seville, and hanged in Mombeltrán. His successful life as a pirate only lasted for five years after having captured Cortés' treasure.
