Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.
Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.
Here are the ground rules:
Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.
Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.
Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.
We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.
Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.
Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).
The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.
Has a fascist or proto-fascist state ever ended or been overthrown without violence?
What happened to the loyalist population in the US after the revolution?
I've heard that a hundred thousand set off to British Canada that helped cement the English population as a block against the French speakers.
In which style were the names of people born in the Soviet Union registered? Was it Russian style by default (given name + patronymic + surname in Cyrillic), ethnic style (the former would apply only for Russian ethnic people), both Russian and ethnic, they could choose...?
Would it be different for a person whose ethnicity was recognised by the Soviet Union and a complete foreigner (like an Italian)?
In the videogame series Crusader Kings, capturing an opposing ruler effectively ends a war and ensures victory for the capturing side. This also seems to be the underlying principle of chess. Was this ever true in real-life ancient and medieval warfare?
What are some of the most accepted theories on why Indus Valley Civilisation came to an end?
How strong (if present at all) was the anti-communist (or anti-Chinese) factor in South Korea-Japan relations after Korean War and during Cold War?
Was Columbus a truly evil person or was he purposefully portrayed as one?
Is it possible for a genoese man to be blonde in 1090s? Is this a good enough explanation?
I'm making a fictional story that takes place in the Crusades. I want this character to be part of the Siege of Jerusalem so I'm making him Genoese. The thing is, this character would be blonde (for reasons) which I believe is a rare hair color in Genoa so I imagine his fellow Genoese men will refer to him as "the blonde one" since it's an eye catching trait of him.
My question is, is it possible for a genoese man to be blonde in the 1090s and can it have an explanation? (sorry if I sound so dumb hahah) I'm thinking of an explanation and what I ended up with is that he has Frisian ancestry from old Frisian merchants who went and settled in Genoa. Did people like travel back then though? Is that a good enough explanation?
What is the oldest found evidence of canines living and working with humans? How old is it, what is it and where was it found?
The first train originated from a wager, it says on this website. It was for 500 guinea. I've got no bearings on how much that would be in today's value. Is there someone that can help me?
I was watching a few Jane Austen movie adaptations, and I remembered in your r/fantasy AMA someone mentioned that in Scotland women could inherit. How common was having no sons a real problem in England, and when was the law changed to allow women to inherit?
Hi all, i was wondering if it ever exists a family tree of the most important rulers (with a hyperlink to a short biography) of every european country from 1500 to 1800. Modern history. It would be nice to have an instant and general sight of the situations. I thought it could be divided into countries, and every country could have a family tree or something like that. Is there something like this?
Are there any good documentaries or YT channels that focus on the Golden Age of Islam?
I hope this is appropriate place to ask the question following 'Moneyball' movie watch-along and not violating 20 year rule since movie is about A's 2002 season but the question is not really time specific (I hope):
Did the obsession with stats in American sports originate after the Moneyball or was it the thing way before that?
When and how was finger snapping discovered
In order to be able to finger snap, you must keep doing it over and over and over again,
The only reason a person would start to practise finger snapping is from the knowledge that your finger will eventually make the sound after doing it enough times,
But how was it discovered when there was no knowledge of it?
I'm wondering how and why savings stamps worked that were used in war times. Was the idea that you could use un-used regular stamps to contribute to donate to the war effort, or were they something you'd buy specifically? If yes, why would you buy them if you wanted to help? Couldn't you just donate money or buy war bonds?
Have there been recorded instances of matriarchal religious cults in recent history?
What are some places named after people or places from the French and Indian war?
Does anybody know if the dry cure pork legs (ie prosciutto and jamon) originated with the Chinese like this vice article (https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/vvqy98/this-chinese-city-has-been-producing-ham-for-more-than-1000-years)? Seems like a strange claim given Cato the Elder described salt cured pork legs hundreds of years before this Chinese city started making these hams.
What kind(size, shape, purpose) of shields did the Gauls use to defend themselves?
Where can I find statistics for Lend Lease food imports to Britain during World War 2? I want to know how much food Britain was importing from North America during World War 2, and how much this supply was affected by U-boat activity.
Can anyone identify the people in this photo in the FDR oval office? I am assuming it is 1941 based on FDR's mourning armband for his mother.
Why did France and England have so many wars with each other and why did they ally later?
It doesn't make sense to me and I haven't been taught too much world history, the only significant thing I learned was the French Revolution, even that topically.
What were the wars between Sweden and Denmark about? And why isn't there so much bitterness and hatred between them like there is between East Europeans?
How did the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth expand to such massive territory and how could it keep it through so many years?
Why did other countries care about the French Revolution?
Before they started conquering and the revolution was isolated to France, why the other powers like Austria and Prussia Care?
Hello, I plan on writing a paper on how the political usage of mass entertainment to distract people from the ills of society led in part to the fall of the Roman Republic/Empire. However, I am struggling to find primary sources, and I was wondering if someone had any suggestions.
I am hoping to find some on how gladiator games were used to induce feelings of Roman superiority and/or how emperors thought about having plebeians be distracted from their ill deeds. However, any suggestions on topics or sources are welcomed.
One that I have already found, though, is Satire X by Juvenal. This is where the term bread and circuses was coined.
From what I can tell and have read, rape is an element in many of the stories written by Ovid.
Do we know why he had a fascination with rape?
Did his contemporaries think his works were weird/odd because of it?
How did he(or people back then) see rape and what where its effects on victims?
is the rape of Medusa a literal sexual assault or is it meant to represent something else?

What would be a proper name for the resentment that future generations experience towards our generations for not acting upon clear signs of environment disasters and subsequent consequences?
E.g. climate change or the rapid decline in species or the depletion of certain resources. I could imagine that in 400 years from now people will be like "really? Couldn't they just live a little less decadent then we wouldn't be in such trouble".
What would be a good word for this phenomenon?
Is it true that charcuterie (bacon, ham, sausages) actually originated in China or at least dry cured hams did?
Are black people responsible for all European alphabets? I believe all European alphabets can be traced to the Sinatic alphabet which itself has roots in hieroglyphics. The earliest hieroglyphics are from Southern Egypt and Nubia not Lower Egypt. I imagine this population would have been black or mostly black.

Why is county a level of civic adminstration in the US as opposed to other aristocratic land titles like barony, duchy, or earldom?
I've recently been in a really big pirate vibe and so I started researching that era, mainly naval stuff, such as artillery and naval design, I was wondering of there was a book that just explained all that kind of stuff, from cannos to ships to their evolution and their usage in that time period, if not where else should I search?
