When did US military nomenclature for small arms cartridges change from *caliber-year* (e.g. .45-70 or .30-03) to the modern metric format (e.g. 7.62x51mm)? What motivated the change?

Probably during both the Warsaw Pact for non NATO and the establishment of NATO. These were the times when both organizations decide on the small arms for logistical purposes. The Warsaw Pact agreed on using the AK series of weapons or something based on that while nato decide on using only the same ammunition. They probably called it 5.56 because that’s a measurement and not something based upon years and powder loads.
