How much makeup was worn in the early 20th century? Or Edwardian?

I saw a post complaining about photoshopping pics of Kate Winslet in Titanic (1998), and she definitely looks like even more makeup was digitally added since the movie release. Then I wondered... what WOULD women have looked like in history? All I can recall in Elizabethan is her penchance for lead face whitener and maybe berries for rouge / lipstick? Did normal (gentry) people even bother? Was there no makeup in Edwardian society, given their austere lifestyle?

There actually was makeup at the time! I discussed the types of cosmetics in common use in the nineteenth and early twentieth century in this older post of mine.
