What was second class life like aboard the Titanic

Second class made up the smallest cohort of classes on the Titanic. In the past both American and European societies were dominated by a large working class and comparatively smaller but still big upper class, the middle class was the minority. It is known that some in the second class were teachers, lawyers, business owners and priests.

Second class had some of the grandeur of first class but had some limitations like third class, a focus on bare necessities. Both second and third class passengers were restricted from accessing any first class quarters, although the first class had the privleged to roam in all quarters as they pleased. Compared first class the interior was less spacious with less intricate and ornate furniture in the dining hall, smoking room and actual passenger rooms. They did not have their own washrooms, so they had to share a common toilets unlike first class.

In terms of fashion, second class would wear much of the same 1910s style as first class but often the clothes were worn in and older, sometimes garments were of a previous fashion era. In comparison, it was expected that those in first class wear only newly made garments and the latest in fashion, third class wore more simple clothing.

There was no banquet style dining for second class which first class had, second class were served multi-course meals.

Just under half of the second class passengers survived the Titanic, which was a better rate then third class.

I had an assignment on Titanic in high school and have seen a bunch of documentaries about it.
