Searching for the grave of a Wehrmacht soldier

by darrylsnow

Hi internet!

I'm researching my family history and wondering whether my great grandfather's grave might still be in a cemetery somewhere. He was from Vienna and conscripted into the Wehrmacht 435th infantry regiment. He was killed in action during the siege of Leningrad in January 1943. I'm wondering whether his grave might have been most likely...

  1. destroyed by the Soviets
  2. relocated to the German war dead cemetary in Sologubovka
  3. in Vienna somewhere (and later reclocated to the war dead area in Vienna central cemetery?)

I'm not quite sure where to research next so if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

I just checked the online database of the German War Graves Comission (Volksbund Kriegsgräberfürsorge). Their database has three Rudolf Rollers but they don't match the dates for your grandfather. https://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche.html?tx_igverlustsuche_pi1%5Bnachname%5D=Roller&tx_igverlustsuche_pi1%5Bvorname%5D=Rudolf&tx_igverlustsuche_pi1%5Btov_jjjj%5D=1943&tx_igverlustsuche_pi1%5Btov_output%5D=1943&tx_igverlustsuche_pi1%5Bbacktosearch%5D=1&tx_igverlustsuche_pi1%5Bsearchtype%5D=person

Since you have quite a bit of data for your relative, you could ask for more information at the Bundesarchiv Abteilung PA which is handling Wehrmacht personell files: https://www.bundesarchiv.de/DE/Content/Artikel/Ueber-uns/Aus-unserer-Arbeit/Textsammlung-Unterlagen-Abt-PA/unterlagen-abt-pa.html

Note that it can take more than a year until you get the results. I waited 18 months when I asked for my great grandfather's info.

Ancestry published a huge WWII Wehrmacht database of fallen soldiers. Try to search there. Maybe you will find him there and his first burial site might be mentioned on his file. Otherwise you might get lucky with an inquiry to German Red Cross. They will discontinue the service soon so hurry with it.
