Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:
Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
...And so on!
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.
I've been reading Maristella Svampa's Las fronteras del neoextractivismo en América Latina - Conflictos socioambientales, giro ecoterritorial y nuevas dependencias. For the majority of our public, that translates to The frontiers of neo-extractivism in Latin América - Socioenvironmental conflicts, ecoterritorial turn and new dependences. It's a fairly short book pertaining to the sociological impact of the commodities boom of the late 90s and early 2000s, and how that boom helped develop a new colonial tendency of alignment and dependence to Europe and North América for many South and Central American countries in the last several decades, a form of neocolonialism that continues to cause conflicts in the entire region. A very interesting read so far.
Hi, I am interested in reading about the Mongols. Nothing in particular. A broad overview would be nice. Thanks!
I'm looking for some good reading about the Romani people and their history in Europe. It could be an overview or centered around one specific topic and/or geographic area. The reading materials could be in Galician, Spanish, Portuguese, or English; French, too, if it's not too informal (I have a better understanding of academic/formal language). Thanks!
I'd like to read a book which explains genocide of indigenous peoples of the US and loss of land. I am especially interested in books which include economic motivations and explore how public policy influenced Americans' relations with their Indian neighbors.
I’ve got a post up for this but I figured I’d ask here as well.
Thoughts on The Puritans: A Transatlantic History by David D. Hall for someone new to American religious history?
What good, obtainable, books are there on Western European Economic development from 1000-1500. Doing an admittedly quick google job it seems that most were written in the 70s and are now ludicrously expensive.
Cheers
I'm looking for a good introduction to the Italian society during and/or immediately after the First World War. Although I'm more interested in the Italian society before the world started to boil again, a more general book book about interwar Italy might also be fine.
I’m looking for recommendations for the study of early Hellenistic Sparta and the Peloponnese. Any stand-out must reads?
What are the best books on operation gladio? Either in English or Italian
I recently started reading books about terrorism/counter-terrorism and am looking for a good, modern, overview of the Algerian War. Any recommendations?
