Hey guys! I’ve been exploring around our house that we just moved into, and noticed there are significant and weird markings on the brick that surrounds the house. They are in one big spot at the back of the house, and in one big spot right by the front door. Could this have been a tool that they used back in the 1860’s? Is this common on old brick houses? I attached a link to this.
It looks like you have lower quality brick there. It’s hard to tell if there was an infill where you filmed or just to the right, but you can see that the brick is a different color and texture. Often times, to save money, old builders would use “building brick” on the inside of buildings and “face brick” on the outside of buildings. Building brick would tend to be lower quality and not treated in the same way as face brick; as a result, building brick tended to be inconsistent. Face brick is meant to be the aesthetic and waterproof layer on the outside of the structure.
As I said above, it appears to me that this was an infill patch (or the brick adjacent to it was an infill patch).
