Hi-
I am a writer based in Maryland, USA, and I am writing a novel which is initially set in 1930's London. I am trying to find some resources on British foodways in 1930, as well as some information about social demographics for the city during the interwar period.
-My main character is a middle class doctor-- Where would he have likely lived? I am not native to Britain, though I have been several times, and I know neighborhoods in London have likely changed vastly.
-Are there any good books that give an overview of London life during that period? I've been sort of swamped with results, and am looking for something that is concise with a good index.
Thanking you in advance.
With regard to location: the 1930s were the heyday of the London suburbs; travel links via both the London Underground and overground networks, and also by bus, were complete by this date and were reliable and affordable. So, while a middle class doctor might live pretty much anywhere in London outside the most expensive and exclusive inner boroughs, and such a man might have chosen the area inside the Circle Line tube if he was single for the sake of access to the city's major leisure facilities, a married family man would probably have preferred a larger home, with a garden, in the outer boroughs. Which area exactly would depend on the plot of the book, but if you look at the current London tube map, pretty much anywhere in what are now zones 2-5 would have been affordable. West London addresses were smartest (Chelsea especially for the more affluent, but areas such as Ruislip and Acton were up-and-coming for those of more modest means), east London, beyond the traditional East End, the newest and most affordable (think places such as South Woodford); south London, especially south-east London (Forest Hill and its surrounds particularly) perhaps the most bourgeois. Working class areas were largely clustered close to the river and in the East End.
With regard to a book, it is hard to go wrong with Jerry White, and his London in the Twentieth Century can be thoroughly recommended.
