Everyday life during the Spanish Civil War

by Lemur1211

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with sources regarding the civilian (everyday) life during the Spanish Civil War. The best one I was able to dig up is “Blood of Spain: An oral history of the Spanish War”, a book by Ronald Fraser. Scientific articles are welcome too.

Thank you.

Just in case you have missed the wonderful AMA with /u/crrpit, it might be worth checking out while you wait for new possible reading suggestions.

There's less on this than you might think. So far as published interviews go, to my knowledge Blood of Spain is pretty unique - there have certainly been other oral history projects carried out, but they are not available in such a convenient form. One potentially useful and easily accessible source might be the ABC newspaper, which has been fully digitised for this period (google 'abc hemeroteca'). In terms of secondary literature, the obvious recommendation is Michael Seidman's Republic of Egos: A Social History of the Spanish Civil War. It's a controversial book that makes a provocative argument (which generated a very mixed reaction) - it's a really valuable account, but not one to rely on in isolation perhaps.

Hi there anyone interested in recommending things to OP! While you might have a title to share, this is still a thread on /r/AskHistorians, and we still want the replies here to be to an /r/AskHistorians standard - presumably OP would have asked at /r/history or /r/askreddit if they wanted non-specialist opinion. So give us some indication why the thing you're recommending is valuable, trustworthy, or applicable! Posts that provide no context for why you're recommending a particular podcast/book/novel/documentary/etc, and which aren't backed up by a historian-level knowledge on the accuracy and stance of the piece, will be removed.
