I’ve been sat here scrolling through posts for the last 2 hours just shaking my head and dropping my jaw... honestly some of the write ups here are phenomenal, and I totally mean that! You guys are really really smart and it’s so flipping cool to see that!
This is going off on a tangent but I was reading something earlier in a post about how they let the dough sour a bit before rising it, thus making it a ‘SourDough’.. like how does one even say ‘hey, let’s leave it to sour a little and see what it’s like?’ Things like that blow my mind to be quite honest, especially for that day and age. I’m one of those people who was really naive and thought that we only started living nice in the 1900’s.. let alone learning about random guys like ‘Casimir III the great’ who was the king of Poland in 1333..
Now you might say what does he have to do with anything? For me.. it’s just mindblowing that there was a guy who was a King in 1333 who probably thought he had the world at his feet and was living during great times, just like we did up until 2020. It’s intriguing to see people being able to talk at such length about these people’s lives, nearly 1000 years after their deaths! I mean nobody else might be talking about Casimir III, but even in 2020 he’s not forgotten. They’ll look back at us in 3033 and probably gasp in amazement as we do to our ancestors.
That’s the beauty of history I guess.
In the hopes this post will not get removed, I just want to wholeheartedly agree with you. This sub is absolutely amazing, and while it took some getting used to the time it usually takes for an answer to get approved, the wait is always worth it.
You guys answering our questions on here are amazing. I always enjoyed history, but finding this sub made me appreciate it on a whole different level. I learned a lot about the difficulties of interpreting sources that sometimes are thousands of years old, and I found that while of course I have preferences in topics, it really doesn't matter so much what the question is about - the answers are always so in-depth and high quality that it is a pleasure to read up on whatever subject.
Thank you, history buffs and mods. You guys make this one of the, if not the single best sub in my subscription list, and I sincerely respect your knowledge and commitment. This is what learning about history should be like.
Welcome to the mind blowing aspects of studying history! Even for me it can make me dizzy sometimes.
But I want to say I think you're hitting on a really important part of studying and understanding history, which is to try to understand people in other times and places from their points of view, and see how that challenges our own understanding of our experience, which by human nature is very limited.
I think this is super important because it's depressingly common to mine history for points-scoring (see: endless arguments about comparing dictators' body counts) or to make anachronistic political or ideological arguments (see: almost everything about the fall of Rome, or about the relative "advances" of different peoples or civilizations), or even to overly-focus on all the horrible things that have happened throughout history. It's all too easy and yet a critical mistake to not see the actual people living through the periods we study.
That’s really nice and all, but not allowing posts like yours is what makes this sub so magical.
I agree that this place is fantastic, and if you insist that those who answer are great and awesome human beings, who am I to disagree with that? However what makes this sub awesome is YOU. The participation and curiosity gives this place its power and that just can't be overstated. Without really interesting questions and followups this would be a drab place, but that community engagement of asking, following up, or even just throwing an updoot for a good answer is what adds magic to the mix.
So, everyone, THANK YOU for being a part of our special place and adding to its identity.
Also, three cheers for the best mod team on reddit, without whom this would not happen... Hip-hip Huzzah! Hip-hip Huzzah! Hip-hip Huzzah!
Totally understand if this comment or threat does get taken down but I agree. I'm unable to comment on posts because I'm just not qualified but I always want to say thanks to the people who do answer. As someone else said, the reason it's good is because of the moderating team being on top of things, at least that's the impression I get. Thanks for this sub <3
It’s because 99.999999% of responses are removed
Agreed, this sub is basically what got me interested in reddit as a website in the first place realizing that "hey, some places aren't that bad." The moderation here is absolutely golden. I hope to one day (maybe?) contribute a few pieces here myself on political history (political institutions and the like) for my own personal sake and for a pet project at some point in the future but right now my knowledge on these subjects are not fully up to spec yet.
Imagine scrolling through this well moderated subreddit and then posting this post in order to defile it
This also applies to my comment and is more evidence of the broken window theory
Yeah no this is the best subreddit by fucking far
