The video game Assassins Creed has a large number of roman ruins in England around 850 AD. While I understand that's a video game, how much would the average Saxon in that time period actually see of Roman buildings and constructions?
Hello, we talked about this in our recent AC: Valhalla-themed AMA here.
Tl:Dr: Largely it depends on location and utility. The Roman defences of cities like Exeter and Canterbury remained in use throughout the period, while those in cities like Chester and London lay vacant for centuries before finally being restored in the late 9th and early 10th centuries. In Rocester, the former Roman fortress became an integral part of the Early Medieval English settlement, while the fortress at Hardknott had no use to anybody and was abandoned.
