Are there any book recommendations to learn more about the prehistory of Algonquian (or even Algic) and Iroquoian-speaking peoples?
Looking more specifically at Anishinaabe, Cree/Nehiyaw, and Huron/Wendat peoples but also open to learning about other Iroquoian and Algic groups.
Ooof. That’s a bit of a broad subject mostly because of how vast and varied Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples were and still are.
If you are looking into Huron-Wendat history, I recommend Children of Aataentsic by Bruce Trigger.
From Haudenosaunee/Iroquois history I would look into Daniel K. Richter’s The Ordeal of the Longhouse, Roland Viau’s Enfants du Néant et Mangeurs d’âmes (if you can speak French) and Francis Jennings’ The Ambiguous Iroquois Empire.
All these books go past pre-history but it is hard to find a book solely on prehistory.
As for thé history of Algonquian peoples, I am not as well versed in the historiography.
