This may be a dumb question but, I’ve been looking at Viking longboats and comparing them to other types of ships and they seem fairly small. If Vikings traveled so much how did their ships not succumb to the ocean? Again, I’m sorry if I sound stupid.

Not a stupid question at all! The key here is that they used different ships for their exploratory voyages than they did for going viking. More can always be said from anyone with the knowledge, so if anyone wants to speak about Viking ship design, don't let this post stop you! For the meantime, OP, you may be interested in u/jschooltiger's consolidated answer on Viking ships.
