Did peasants know how to count?

Were people so badly educated that some of the basic cognitive functions we take for granted simply non-existent in ancient times?

Many common people needed to know how to count things like money, I would imagine. There also existed an appointment called "Reeve" in the middle ages, which was like a peasant foreman who also had the responsibility of keeping track of supplies with a tally-stick. Reeves did not have to be literate.
