A little while ago i heard something about norsemen owning bears as pets and that they were called "house-bears" is this true or just one of those exaggerated stories?
I once wrote some relevant accounts in How did medieval people capture and transport dangerous animals while keeping them alive?
In short, we can confirm that medieval Greenlanders and Icelanders exported the polar bear to Europe mainly as exotic gifts between rulers, but we don't know (or, should be rather skeptical of) how common it had been practiced among their ancestor Vikings in Scandinavian Peninsula, at least based on the extant materials.
