Following the results of the 1995 Quebec independence referendum, Premier Jacques Parizeau infamously noted in his concession speech that sovereignty had lost due to the "money and ethnic votes". Was this true? Did wealthier and non-white Quebecers vote predominantly against sovereignty?

French Quebecers born in Québec voted for sovereignty at more than 65%, while anglophones and immigrants voted to stay in Canada at more than 90%, it was a source of big tension. But money and ethnic votes is a reference to the "no" side spending a lot more money than the limit allowed for the referendum, and the Canadian governement allowing more than twice the normal amount of immigrants months before the referendum compared to every other months of the past few years. The "Yes" side only needed about 40k more votes to win the referendum so everything was a good excuse that could have possibly changed the result that night.
