Thursday Reading & Recommendations | December 17, 2020

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

I'm looking for an English book on King Carol I of Romania. Searches just turn books on Carol II.

And/or books that cover the old Kingdom of Romania from 1881-1914; things like infrastructure, reforms, economic improvements, stuff like that.

Anybody have a good historian talking about the actual power of medieval European monarchies/baronies?

It wasn't feudalism, it wasn't authoritarianism, but it was something. What was it?

In general, I'm looking for an elucidation of what our history textbook is calling "Traditional" societies. (I've always heard "pre-Modern," but that's just me.)

I'm looking for a good book or two on John Moses Browning, and possibly on Smith&Wesson or Winchester (the people, although the companies would naturally be a part of that.) I recently read a book on Samuel Colt and enjoyed it, so now I'm looking to learn about other American firearms designers.

I did try the booklist with no success, but if I've simply been stupid and missed something I apologize.

this probably gets asked very often, but i am looking for the absolutely best books on WWII, and Adolf Hitler.

I’m looking for a Marxist account of history, but I don’t want it to ignore everything else and pick some evidence to establish a Marxist history. The topic doesn’t matter much, it can be about everything from how Roman Empire functioned to how the West colonized Africa. Still, I’d prefer it not to cover the whole world history as in such cases theory usually directs the narrative more apparently. I’m interested in the ways in which good Marxist historians engage with the documents.

Neill Faulkner’s books seemed appealing but the fact that he writes about a wide range of topics made me a bit skeptical.
