The 'Silk Road' as commonly perceived is a bit of a pervasive myth. Many merchants did take sea routes in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, but most merchants also traded relatively locally, and so a merchant in, say, Lanzhou, Kashgar or Kabul was almost certainly going to be travelling to an overland destination anyway.
