Hi,
As the title says, I’m looking for a biography on the Algerian freedom fighter Emir Abdelkader al-Jazairi which describes his life.
Ideally, if possible, I would like a book that seems to be respected by the Muslim community and doesn’t analyze the Emir’s life from an Orientalist lens.
The most accessible biography on him is titled Commander of the Faithful: The Life and Times of Emir Abd el-Kader by John Kiser. It's more of a pop history book but does a decent job of covering his life.
As far as "Orientalist lens", I presume you mean the narrative about his "conversion" from a man of war to a man of peace due to his exposure and then embracing of French ideals? That narrative never took hold in American and British academic circles, it's really a (now outdated) French academic idea. Another Road to Damascus: An Integrative Approach to 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza'iri by Tom Woerner-Powell covers this very well. It's going to be a bit harder to get your hands on than Kiser's book but is much more academic and makes extensive use of primary sources.
