Al-Ghazali is notorious for single-handedly destroying all semblance of intellectualism in Islam, leading down the path to Al-Qaeda and ISIS. How did one man alone have so much influence?

I have tried to get through his work, but have not been able to exactly understand what he's trying to say. English is not my first language.

This is a flawed viewpoint, in particular the "leading down to the path", a lot of these answers are old so it would be great if someone wrote up a new one but in the meantime you can have a look at these:
