How were Black people in South Africa able to get around during the Apartheid with no personal car?

From what I've read, Black South Africans were banned from public transport. What system was put in place for them to get from place to place and how did it work?

During Apartheid black people were not barred from owning cars . It was just very difficult and would invite a lot of police attention.

There was a system to ensure that the black population could fulfill their "Apartheid purpose". There was a whole transport system of busses and trains to ensure that the workers could get from the segregated townships to their jobs .

During the struggle transport strikes and disruptions were a major aspect of the opposition to the regime
