Please excuse me if the question is stupid. I need this for a story I'm writing. If during more or less peaceful times the army itself was in barracks were the generals with them at all times or did they have a different place of residence?
You may be dissapointed (or thrilled) to learn that there really weren't standing armies as you might think of them in medieval Europe. Generals/commanders/officers were made up of the nobility, so in times of peace they were doing whatever nobles do.
