I am very confused on why there was no attempt at some kind of greater recounista into north Africa. I mean Spain was getting very powerful later on after 1492 and they could at least gain some land for Christians. Plus Spain was going though the Spanish Inquisition and they were very interested in Christianity. So why didn't they?

As always, more can be said; but the short of it is that both Spain and Portugal did try but other events took focus and resources away from this endeavor.
