Is the embroidered / beaded face veil seen in Oriental/Middle Eastern stereotypes an actual thing? Or is it a Western invention?

I have been curious about the origin of this silk-mesh, beaded/lacey face veils often worn by women of the 'Orient' in popular culture. Is there an actual culture which these veils originate from, or is it purely an invention of Western imagination? I have not been able to find much in my own searching.
