De-nazification of the lower level nazis

I'm curious about the reintegration of the lower level Einsatzgruppen, the SS, uninformed police etc back into society. From what I have read, most seemed to have escaped punishment in courts, but I'm wondering how they stepped back into their previous worlds, and if there are any books about this. Thanks

How were the lower-ranked SS members treated post-war? Did the majority retain their Nazi beliefs, or did they think themselves foolish? How did the majority feel about their action? Did any become Nazi partisans and continue to fight, like some Japanese soldiers after the war?
