Should I major in history? Ok so, I am a Junior in high school and wanna major in history and become a lawyer. I absolutely love history, all the details and intricate facts and the overall fascination it brings me. However, I am well aware of how History careers aren't the best well-paying or don't have much room for advancement. I was going to get my Bachelor's in History, maybe minor in Business and go to law school. It would be an enjoyabke career for me, but not something I'm extremely passionate about. I want a career with a good salary, security, and room for advancement. If there is any such career in History besides a lawyer I could pursue, please tell me. I especially love anything to do with Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, the Victorian Era, the Stuarts, and the Renaissance. Thanks!
Hey! There is a whole lot you can do without being a lawyer. Libraries, museums, and auction houses are all staffed by people who studied history. I also personally know many people who used their degrees in history to secure jobs in finance, tech, and journalism. A history degree holds so many opportunities, it really is up to you to figure out which career you want.
I know this is super frustrating to hear, but don’t worry about it yet. Once you get to college, take different classes in subject you might be interested in: history, business, law, etc. Figure out what you like or don’t like. Talk to professors and ask about viable career options in their areas of study. History is a major that builds strong reading, writing, and analytical skills, so it comes in handy in many careers (and employers know that!). But don’t stress yourself out picking a major now that you might end up ruling out in a few years anyway:)
