What was so significant about Edward Thatch, or Blackbeard?

by QuitBSing

He is perhaps the most famous pirate and often the first one that comes to mind when thinking about pirates.

But how and why did he get this reputation? He was only active for about two years. I expected him to be more important as a historical figure considering his fame.

While more can certainly be said if a pirate expert were to come into this thread, I recently went on a pirate AskHistorians binge so I gathered up some relevant comments for you.

The infamy surrounding blackbeard comes from a mix of the notoriety of blockading Charlestown, from purposely cultivating an image for publicity, and the inclusion of Blackbeard in literature on pirates that went on to influence future content on pirates.
