Why didn’t the allied coalition have Napoleon killed after his defeat in 1814 and 1815?

Given his abilities and ambition, it didn’t seem like a wise decision to keep him alive. Was it just out of respect for what he’d accomplished? The other theory I had was they didn’t want to upset any French citizens who were still loyal to him.
