Why didn't Moroccan Kingdoms conquer the Canary Islands?

by Ricardolindo

Why didn't one of the Moroccan dynasties, Idrisids, Almohads, Almoravids or Marinids, conquer the neighboring Canary Islands before Castile did? Why wasn't there interest in spreading Islam to the pagan Guanche?

Here's some information I found online:

"Well, follow the money, or in this case, the lack of it.

The Canarias didn’t offer any incentive for the Moroccans for conquest: not the Idrisids, or Almohads, or Marinids… just a few pagan tribes and nothing more.

As things happened, the conquest of the Canarias was initially a private enterprise by two Norman entrepreneurs, Jean de Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle.

They travelled there because they found an economic incentive to do just that, orchilla (Roccella canariensis), a lichen used for dyeing textiles, the industry both men had investments. They found investors in Castilla, and eventually sold their interests to the Count of Niebla, who sold them to three Andaluzan families: Casas, Pedraza and García de Herrera.

Based on these holding the Crown of Castilla claimed the islands at the time of the Treaty of Alcáçovas-Toledo (1479)."

Here's another one:

"The Almoravids & Almohads were tribal states, not of the sea or sea exploration oriented kind, but more of the land and desert living and dominating kind. They made stylish architecture, but are not famous by any sea-related facts or explorations."

As you can see, Castile had the interests, capitals and motivation, as the only way for them to expand "legally" (without offending the pope) was through the sea (over land, they were boxed in by Portugal, Aragon, Navarra and France). As for Moroccans, they could still expand over land in North and West Africa, and thus had less motivation to expand through the sea, and they had no interests over a couple islands with low population and resources that they already had aplenty (in this case, dyes).

I hope that answered your question.
