How much did the Neo-Babylonian and Neo-Assyrian empires know about their earlier counterparts?

Did they see themselves as continuations of the previous empires of the same name or is that just a naming system of historians? What would they have known about them?

The Neo-Assyrian kings were quite proud of their scholarly prowess. In one of his inscriptions, for instance, the Assyrian king Aššurbanipal bragged about his familiarity with ancient texts and the older forms of cuneiform signs.
