The Wikipedia biography for Joe Medicine Crow mentions an incident where he was involved in the capture of a large number of horses belonging to the SS. What happened to them?
It's fairly well-known that the German armed forces were very reliant on horse transport, whereas the Western Allies were entirely motorized (except for niche cases like some incidents in Italian mountain warfare). I cannot find mention of any Allied organizations in the ETO that handled horses. At the same time, though, the series of defeats that the Germans suffered in 1944-45 would've necessarily included large numbers of those horses being captured by the victors, and it would seem uncharacteristically wasteful of the Allies to not put them to use somehow, even if not in a military application (because shipping fodder is horribly space-inefficient). Any information?
One thing to know is that the Germans had a LOT of horses, so a variety of things happened to them. A common fate was to be shot and left for dead, especially in the eastern front where the majority of German logistics were committed. As the Red Army pushed to the west, they essentially routed every German army they encountered, killing almost everyone and destroying their logistical chain in the process. This included horses, a vital part of that logistics system. The Red Army was very highly mechanized at that point and had little need for horses and no time to take care of them.
More horses lived than served, though! As the Nazis fell, they left behind a great deal of equestrian property. Much of this was seized by the allies as prizes, being distributed across the USSR and France and Britain. The US army maintained some of the horse farms and returned them there. After the war, there was quite a fire sale on German horses, as the number of them was huge and their breeding was considered very high quality. Its possible that an Arabian you see at your local equestrian club is descended from a German horse taken after WWII. WK Kellogg (yep, the cereal guy) was an avid horse breeder and imported hundreds of formerly German horses to his various ranches. Ya know how the Nazis wanted to make the perfect human genetically? They were doing the same thing with horses.
