Hello all, I was wondering what this logo means on a helmet. I shared it on my profile that way you can see.
I've searched all over the internet and couldn't find anything about this logo. I couldn't even find the logo, until I ran into this photo. I searched words like "square on side of helmet WW2" and other words.
The 77th Infantry Division used a simplified form of their shoulder sleeve insignia consisting of a rectangular outline stenciled in yellow in various shades and thicknesses on both helmet liners and helmet shells as a means of identification most associated with the Ryukyus campaign (Okinawa and outlying islands), although the stencils themselves first appeared when the division was fighting in the Philippines late in 1944. The photo you posted is described as men of the 77th Infantry Division listening to news of the surrender of Germany on the radio in May 1945.
