Okay I’ve tried google but maybe I’m not wording it right. So back in the day 1700’s sailing ships, like ones the British u.s. and other European navy’s would use (warships), why was the deck height so short? Like the gun deck and sleeping quarters and what not. I’ve toured one or two in real life and also in movies it seems like everyone’s hunched over. What’s the reasoning? Is it just they didn’t need that much room? Or people are rarely standing below decks? Or something to do with weight and balance and center of gravity? I’d be really disappointed if the answer was “they were just shorter back then” ha. Well thanks!
